\u2026For at Cedar Lodge, we\u2019ve been playing our own form of Countdown this Christmas.<\/p>\n
Determined that Covid wouldn\u2019t hamper our fun, word games have been a great way for us to enjoy each other\u2019s company over the festive season.<\/p>\n
A favourite of ours has been coining anagrams from well-known Christmas sayings.<\/p>\n
As we spend the winter locked in, it\u2019s been a great activity that we can all enjoy safely. And what\u2019s more, we dare say we\u2019re pretty good at it\u2026<\/p>\n
Some of our residents\u2019 word-crunching coups include\u2026<\/p>\n
Creating 8 words from the noun \u2018Reindeer\u2019.
15 from the phrase \u2018Yuletide\u2019.<\/p>\n
And a whopping 36 words from surely the most famous name of the season: \u2018Father Christmas\u2019<\/p>\n
Admittedly, we didn\u2019t have the same degree of luck with the word Santa Claus. But we didn\u2019t let that dampen our spirits!<\/p>\n
We eventually decided to put our poor performance down to how the term \u2018Santa Claus\u2019 isn\u2019t really English to begin with.<\/p>\n
In fact, it derives from the Dutch word for Saint Nick – Sinter Klaas and therefore hides few anagrams in the English language. (We\u2019re not sure whether that\u2019s true\u2026.but it certainly made us feel better!)<\/p>\n
Indeed, so invested have our residents become in these regular word games, that they now head straight to the dictionary if they hear a word they don\u2019t recognise.<\/p>\n
And it goes without saying that the games have been a great way to keep our brains ticking over.<\/p>\n
Anagrams target the areas of our mind which deal with problem solving; as well as the bits that process reasoning, memory and vocabulary.<\/p>\n
By training these parts of the brains, we can all bolster our brain health. Better protecting us from the memory problems often experienced in older age.<\/p>\n
For us, the camaraderie that the games provide is reason enough to get stuck in. And we\u2019re looking forward to entering 2021 sharper than ever.<\/p>\n
