The passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was met with great sadness by everyone at Cedar Lodge. For many, the Queen was the jewel that crowned our British identity. She represented continuity in a changing world, and brought the nation together by our shared admiration for her kindness and sense of duty that she embodied throughout her 70 year reign. While many of Cedar Lodge’s residents would have been born in the reign of her father or even grandfather, the Queen soon became an ever-present figure in the background to their lives. Some even had the privilege to receive a telegram from Her Majesty on their 100th birthday – like one of our residents this summer. The sense of wonder as she opened the envelope and read the message from her Majesty enclosed, shall always be a memory we hold dear at Cedar Lodge.

She was Grandmother to us all. And her later life acted as a shining example of how we can draw insight and guidance from the older generation – and the unique role the elderly play in our society.

To mark her passing, we thought it fitting to share some happy photos from the Platinum Jubilee, when we held our own party at Cedar Lodge to celebrate the Queen. The care home was decked with union jacks and even included a photo cut out of her Majesty, with which people had the chance to take pictures. A toast was given to the Queen as we sat down to a special BBQ tea to celebrate her reign.

As we enter a period of national mourning, memories such as the Jubilee remind us at Cedar Lodge of the happiness and light the Queen brought to her realms. We thank you Ma’am and may you rest in peace.
